

Although right now, even at $120 a month for the SB plan (it's $10 a month per device), it's cheaper than other cloud options that currently support Linux (S3, Wasabi, B2, etc). That gives me until May 2019 to find a suitable replacement. If I take them up on their convert to the small business plan and take the 75% off for the first 12 months, it would actually be cheaper than Crashplan Home Pro for that 12 months for one device. Thankfully I have until May(ish) 2018 until my subscription expires. I'd say I'd remotely mount the drives to a Windows VM or something and then upload from there, but I think the Backblaze client detects that it's not an actual installed hard drive. I'm currently backing up about 4.5 TB of data (granted the bulk of that is video which doesn't really NEED to be backed up). I would love to use Backblaze but the fact that there isn't a Linux client kinda sucks. Other accounts are not free and are paid for by LSA Technology Services. The university covers the cost of CrashPlan for all faculty, other than those in Michigan Medicine. Looking at their blog announcement, there are also MANY others not happy. Crashplanner can be used to determine if someone already has a CrashPlan account. Been using Crashplan for quite a while and not exactly happy about the change. As for the upload speed / time YES CrashPlan can be VERY slow. However, you may run into frustrating issues if you are behind advance security gateways like Sonicwall, Fortinet, etc. With Crashplan, my cost for all systems with external hard drives is 149.99. In conclusion, CP is a good reliable and cost effective backup solution providing that you are behind generic firewall. You have traded cost for speed and availability. You did save a lot of money not paying for hot storage. You data is still available, you just have to wait for it. Further finetuning of the firewall will be required. It’s a cheap last resort backup service a backup plan to recover when all other local backup facilities failed you. It's just odd that the MAC CP is having problems communicating out of the firewall while the Windows machine is fine. I have worked with both technical support from CP and Sonicwall, both have different ideas of what may be the problem.

Months went by without any issues then problem with the MAC machine reappeared where it cannot connect to the CP server (meanwhile no configuration change was made to the firewall). With the latest firmware it seems as that CP on the MAC had a hard time bypassing the firewall security so I had to explicitly open all the required ports then it started running normally again. It was good until I upgraded to Sonicwall Gateway. I have used this software for a few years installed on a MAC and a Windows machine.
